Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month 2024

October 2024 is Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month!

This month-long campaign allows us to celebrate the incredible contributions of medical sonography to modern healthcare. MUAM 2024 is all about the Sonography Squad! This is your time to shine as part of an amazing team of professionals who work together to save and improve lives.

Ultrasound’s role in healthcare has grown exponentially, and its applications now go far beyond pregnancy scans. Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) is used to detect a wide range of conditions across all stages of life. From vascular and cardiac imaging to musculoskeletal and abdominal assessments, sonographers play a vital role in diagnosing and guiding treatment decisions.

This year’s theme, “Sonography Squad,” emphasizes teamwork and the importance of collaboration within the medical field. Whether you’re performing point-of-care ultrasound in an emergency room or working with a team of specialists in a cardiology unit, sonographers are an integral part of the patient care journey.

We invite you to share your personal story about how ultrasound has impacted your life or why you chose sonography as a career. Contact us to share your experience and become part of the conversation!

The SDMS’ 2024 MUAM theme is “Sonography Squad.” Visit the SDMS MUAM webpage to learn more and download resources to celebrate this month.

What is Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month?

Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month (MUAM) is an annual campaign held every October. It is sponsored by six major ultrasound organizations—the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS), the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI), the Society for Vascular Ultrasound (SVU), and the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE).

The goal of MUAM is to educate the public about the critical role ultrasound plays in modern healthcare. Although many are familiar with ultrasound’s role in pregnancy, few realize that ultrasound technology is used in a wide array of medical diagnoses and treatments across the lifespan. From identifying heart conditions and detecting tumors to guiding biopsies, ultrasound technology is a powerful tool that contributes to better outcomes in patient care.

MUAM is also a chance for sonographers to come together and celebrate their profession. Being part of the Sonography Squad means working as part of a team that improves patient lives daily. Sonographers are not just technicians; they are key healthcare providers who help drive accurate diagnoses and treatments. MUAM provides an opportunity to recognize and honor this hard work.

“While many people are familiar with the use of medical ultrasound during pregnancy, it’s essential to recognize that ultrasound plays a critical role in healthcare for people at all stages of life.” ~ American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine

How Can Sonographers Participate in MUAM?

  • Educate your patients. Many participating ultrasound organizations provide resources to help you educate your patients. For example, ARDMS and AIUM offer FAQs, fact sheets, and ultrasound term glossaries. The ASE’s website has printable patient guides specific to heart and vascular ultrasound.
  • Start a conversation. Use this opportunity to talk with your patients about their ultrasound procedures. Consider starting with: “It’s Ultrasound Awareness Month! Do you have any questions about your procedure or ultrasound in general?” This opens a dialogue and helps patients better understand their care.
  • Share your pride. Celebrate MUAM by sharing educational videos, social media posts, or hosting events. The SDMS has a fantastic video, “Why Sonographers Do What They Do”, which shares the impact sonography has had on patients’ lives.
  • Discuss certification. Talk to your patients and peers about the importance of ultrasound certification and your professional credentials. Encourage students and colleagues to pursue certification and consider offering guidance to emerging sonographers. Certification ensures that sonographers are skilled and qualified to provide top-notch care.
  • Display your ultrasound pride! Use the images and logos provided by SDMS, SVU, and other organizations to decorate your workspace, your social media profiles, or even your email signatures. You can display them as desktop backgrounds or share them as Facebook covers to help spread awareness.
  • Engage with the media. Reach out to local media outlets to highlight the importance of sonography. You can use press releases or story templates from organizations like the SVU to share the story of MUAM with the broader community.
  • Celebrate with your team! Host fun team-building activities to bring your colleagues together. Whether it’s a potluck, a trivia game with prizes, or a night out with your team, take this opportunity to celebrate the camaraderie that defines the Sonography Squad!
